John 17:3 eternal life is to know the one and only true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent. He went to the Cross so that we may know our creator and walk in intimate fellowship with him.
And that is impossible If God does not show himself to us in some manner.
Simon Peter made a bold confession telling the Lord that he is the Christ the Son of the living God.
Jesus' reply to Peter was this " Blessed are you Simon bar Jonah for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father in heaven, and on this rock I will build my Church. "
The rock that the Church is built on is God revealing himself to through Jesus Christ by his Holy Spirit.
The scriptures themselves testify of Jesus Christ, This is according to the Lord's own assessment of the scriptures as recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 7.
So any foundation based on the truth of the scripture is founded on the rock of the revelation of God in Jesus Christ.
